Altered Tags
By Shari Carroll

Altered tags are mini masterpieces which integrate a range of techniques and a variety of stamps. Find your style and let's get started.

Instructions:
Tag Art
Tags are attractive embellishments for stamped cards and scrapbook pages. They come in a huge variety of sizes and shapes. Think of tags as a topping for gifts, bookmarks or the center piece of a card. Some common uses for tags on scrapbook layouts are for journaling, picture frames, name placement or just a beautiful addition to fill in a niche.

Altered Tags
An altered tag is a form of tag art. It specifically involves techniques like paint, vintage stain, printed paper layers, torn edges, sewing, etc. Additional items like Hero Arts Tiny Tags, metal plates, odd shaped clips, eyelets, brads, and fibers enhance the piece. Listed below are some ideas to get you started on "altered tags."

A simple way to get organized is to choose a theme. Here is an example: For a vintage theme choose inks and stains in brown tones. Next consider the size of the tag and decide on the stamps which will work best. Finally, select accent papers and embellishments that will compliment your theme.

My Favorite Altered Tag
One of my favorite ways to alter a tag is the following: First, stamp an image to one side. Next, layer printed papers to offset the image. Then add a torn piece of vellum at an angle over the top. I then usually tuck a little message that will peek through the vellum. I also like to use patterned papers that I've pieced together to form a strip. To finish the tag, I attach odds and ends for embellishing.

Stamping and Tags
I also like the look of stamps on various colors of patterned paper. I tend to use opposing ink colors. By combining scripts, background strips, flowers and Shadow Stamps, the outcome becomes charming. The stamped papers can be trimmed and added to the tag as a strip or cut into squares then collaged to create a paper quilt.

Remember to use portions of your stamps for small areas. Cut messages apart for single words. A single flower can be used from a bouquet. Use letter sets to make it personal.

Tags are wonderfully refreshing, creative, and useful. The key is just to step outside of your box and create!
