Tip: Common colored pencils will work with this technique. I prefer Prisma because of their saturated colors and smoothness.

Note: Please be sure to read the mineral spirits label before using them and work in a well ventilated area. Here's the Wikipedia link so that you can learn more.

I have found that the pigment in watercolor pencils does not move around on the paper as much as with regular color pencils.

Suggested Materials:
Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits, Prisma Color Pencils, Memories Dye Ink, Stumps and stamps. Clear Design Happy Hello (CL231) and Clear Design Thoughtful Messages (CL184) were used here.

Coloring with Pencils
By Shari Carroll

Have you ever wondered how some people get such great results with their coloring? I'm about to show you, literally, in a video.

Instructions:
The technique for this month is color pencils being blended with odorless mineral spirits.

How it Works Colored pencils are made with a wax binder and color pigment. When the odorless mineral spirits mixes with the pencils, it breaks down the wax and allows you to work with the pigment.

A Little Chat about Mineral Spirits Traditional refined mineral spirits are used for oil paints and come from several manufacturers, I happen to use Gamsol. Odorless mineral spirits have no smell, but this does not mean there are no fumes. It is recommended to use them in a well ventilated area. Mineral spirits may not be for everyone because of the fumes and as an alternative some stampers are using baby oil.

Tools Needed There are these great little things called "stumps", usually found in the fine arts section of craft and hobby stores. Stumps are generally used for blending mediums such as charcoals. They are compressed paper (and sometimes rolled) which can be sanded down when switching colors.

Getting Started Stamp your image with Memories dye ink. Color your image in with pencils. Moisten the stump with "spirits" and begin to blend in a circular motion. Mix colors together or blend to fade shadows.

Take a peek at my video to get more details.

Remember the more you practice, the better you get. Have fun playing with your pencils. This is a very rewarding technique, I promise.

Enjoy!
